Pause and reflect: a book revealed more than fourteen centuries ago is read today exactly as it was revealed. How was it kept safe?
Read pp. 1–2 of your book first. Here is what the book says, in its own order.
The book: the word Quran comes from qira'at, which means to read. The Quran is the one book read more than any other in the world, so it is called the Quran.
It is the last book of Allah Ta'ala, revealed to His last Nabi, Hazrat Muhammad Rasoolullah ﷺ. It is the only book that is preserved today exactly as it was revealed.
Allah Ta'ala took the responsibility for its protection and said:
اِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَاِنَّا لَهٗ لَحٰفِظُوْنَ (سورۃ الحجر: 9)
ترجمہ: بے شک ہم ہی نے (اس) ذکر (قرآن) کو نازل فرمایا ہے اور بے شک ہم ہی اس کی ضرور حفاظت فرمانے والے ہیں۔
The book: Nabi Kareem ﷺ is the last Nabi of Allah Ta'ala, and his message is for all the worlds. In the same way, the book revealed to him is guidance for all mankind until Qiyamat.
In the blessed lifetime of Nabi Kareem ﷺ, most Sahaba-e-Kiram رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہم knew the Quran by heart.
Nabi Kareem ﷺ took special care to have the ayaat written down as soon as they were revealed. The whole Quran had been written in his ﷺ lifetime.
It was usually written on stone slabs, leather, date-palm bark and the shoulder bones of camels, prepared for this purpose. So in that period it was both fully memorised and written in different places.
Hundreds of huffaz were martyred in the Battle of Yamama. Then, in the khilafat of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ, the need to gather the Quran under state care was felt.
On the advice of Hazrat Umar Farooq رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ and other Sahaba رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہم, he began the compilation. He chose the well-known qari Hazrat Zaid bin Sabit رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ, a scribe of wahi, for this great work.
A committee led by Hazrat Zaid bin Sabit رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ gathered the Quran into one mushaf. This copy stayed with Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ, then Hazrat Umar Farooq رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ, then Umm-ul-Momineen Hazrat Hafsa رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا.
In the khilafat of Hazrat Usman رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ, differences arose in recitation in different qira'at and accents. He had copies made of Hazrat Hafsa's رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا copy, sent them to the provinces, and united all Muslims on one qira'at.
