Pause and reflect: the words and actions of Nabi Kareem ﷺ reach us today, fourteen centuries later. Who kept them safe, and how?
Read pp. 4–6 of your book first. Here is what the book says, in its own order.
The book: the words, actions and taqreer of Nabi Kareem ﷺ are called Hadith.
The ahadith are the explanation of the Quran. Allah Ta'ala Himself commanded obedience to Nabi Kareem ﷺ.
So in the time of Nabi Kareem ﷺ and of the Sahaba رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہم, great stress was laid on preserving the ahadith, and they were compiled properly.
The book: tadween-e-Hadith means gathering the ahadith and giving them the form of a book.
The compilation began in the time of Nabi Kareem ﷺ, with his patronage and approval. He spoke slowly, and sometimes repeated his words three times, so that the listener would understand and remember.
He prayed for those who preserve Hadith in these words:
اللہ تعالیٰ اس انسان کو خوش و خرم رکھے جس نے میری بات سنی، یاد کی اور اسے لوگوں تک پہنچایا۔ (سنن ابی داؤد: 3660)
In that period the Sahaba رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہم preserved the ahadith by three means: they memorised them, wrote them down, and acted on them.
Letters were sent to the rulers of Egypt, Syria and Iran. Hazrat Amr bin Hazm رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ was sent as governor of Yemen with written rulings on sadaqa and inheritance. Detailed zakat rulings were written for the collectors.
Sahifa Sadiqa, compiled by Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ, was a collection of ahadith from this very period.
After the wisal of Rasoolullah ﷺ, a large number of the Sahaba رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہم made this work the mission of their lives.
After the Sahaba رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہم, in the time of the Tabi'in, the compilation became an organised movement. The Tabi'in compiled many books of Hadith.
Compilation at state level began in the time of Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz رحمۃ اللہ علیہ. The credit for its peak goes to Imam Malik رحمۃ اللہ علیہ and the authors of the Sihah Sitta.
Muatta Imam Malik, Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Jami Tirmidhi, Sunan Abi Dawud, Sunan Nasai and Sunan Ibn Majah are reliable collections from this period.
The third means, after memorising and writing, is that the Sunnah continued in practice in the Ummah. Its command is in the Quran:
وَمَآ اٰتٰىكُمُ الرَّسُوْلُ فَخُذُوْهُ ۚ وَمَا نَهٰىكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوْا ۚ (سورۃ الحشر: 7)
ترجمہ: اور جو کچھ رسول (ﷺ) تمھیں عطا فرمائیں تو اُسے لے لو اور جس سے تمھیں منع فرمائیں تو (اُس سے) رُک جاؤ۔

The book's conclusion (p. 6): Allah Ta'ala provided special means to protect Hadith along with the Quran, so that believers can act on it until Qiyamat.
Q1. Exercise 2 (i) (p. 6): Give the meaning of Hadith.
Hadith is the words, actions and taqreer of Nabi Kareem ﷺ. His words are hadith-e-qauli, his actions hadith-e-fe'li, his silence at a Sahabi's action hadith-e-taqreeri.
Q2. Exercise 2 (ii) (p. 6): Write any two means of preserving Hadith in the time of Nabi Kareem ﷺ.
Hifz: the Sahaba memorised the ahadith. Kitabat: they wrote them down, for example Sahifa Sadiqa and the written rulings sent to Yemen.
✗ Writing that Hadith was first written down long after the time of Nabi Kareem ﷺ.
✓ The book: the compilation began in the time of Nabi Kareem ﷺ; it gives the letters, the Yemen rulings and Sahifa Sadiqa as evidence.
✗ Calling a Sahabi's action, on which Nabi Kareem ﷺ stayed silent, hadith-e-fe'li.
✓ Fe'li is his own action ﷺ; his silence at a Sahabi's action is taqreeri (p. 4).
✗ Mixing up who began compilation at state level.
✓ The book: state-level compilation began in the time of Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz رحمۃ اللہ علیہ (p. 5).
