Science as a collaborative field: why big problems need many minds

Your guide: Miss AimanThinks the human body is the best-designed machine in the syllabus.

Many fields, one problem

Your book calls science a collaborative field: researchers from various disciplines work together to solve complex problems. Such interdisciplinary teams use the strengths and expertise of each discipline.

The result, the book says, is more efficient work and often quicker and sustainable solutions. It gives five examples.

The Human Genome Project aimed to sequence and map the entire human genome. It was completed in 2003 and joined molecular biology, genetics, informatics and computer science.

Climate change research joins atmospheric science, ecology, economics and sociology. Cancer research joins oncologists, biologists, biochemists, geneticists, pharmacologists and statisticians.

Robotics and AI join computer science, engineering, mathematics, neuroscience and psychology. Space exploration, through NASA and the ISS, joins astrophysics, planetary science, engineering, Biology and medicine.

Interdisciplinary means many disciplines on one problem. Your book's five examples: Human Genome Project, climate change, cancer research, robotics and AI, space exploration.

Key terms

Interdisciplinary
Researchers from several disciplines working on one problem.
Human Genome Project
Sequencing and mapping the entire human genome.
Oncologist
A doctor on the cancer research team, as your book explains.
ISS
A space project where scientists from many fields work together.

Short questions with model answers

  1. Q1. Justify with an example that science is a collaborative field.

    • State the idea.
    • Give one example with its disciplines.
    • Give the outcome.

The Human Genome Project: four disciplines together mapped the whole human genome by 2003, which no single field could do alone.

  2. Q2. Which disciplines does your book list for cancer research, and why is each needed?

    • List them from p. 14.
    • Link each to its strength.

Six disciplines, each adding a strength the others lack.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Giving the wrong completion year for the Human Genome Project.

✓ Your book: completed in 2003.

  • ✗ Thinking collaboration means only biologists working together.

✓ It means different disciplines: climate research even includes economics and sociology.

  • ✗ Naming a project without saying which fields it joins.

✓ An example proves collaboration only when you list the disciplines involved.

MCQs

  1. 1. The Human Genome Project was completed in:

    1. (a) 1998
    2. (b) 2003
    3. (c) 1878
    4. (d) 2013
    Show answer

    (b) Your book, p. 13.

  2. 2. Atmospheric science, ecology, economics and sociology work together in:

    1. (a) Space exploration
    2. (b) Cancer research
    3. (c) Climate change research
    4. (d) Robotics and AI
    Show answer

    (c) Your book's climate change example (p. 13).

  3. 3. An oncologist is, in your book's words, a:

    3. (c) Space exploration
    4. (d) Robotics and AI
    Show answer

    (d) With computer science, engineering and mathematics (p. 14).

  5. 5. Interdisciplinary teams, your book says, lead to:

    1. (a) Slower solutions
    2. (b) Quicker and sustainable solutions
    3. (c) Fewer experiments
    4. (d) One scientist doing all the work
    Show answer

    (b) Your book, p. 13.

Quick revision

  • Science is collaborative: many disciplines work together on complex problems.
  • The Human Genome Project mapped the human genome and was completed in 2003.
  • Climate, cancer, robotics and space research each join their own set of fields.
