Yield: what the equation promises vs what you get

The problem

The recipe says it makes 24 samosas. You end up with 21: two burst in the oil and one vanished during “quality testing”. The recipe was not lying. The kitchen is just not perfect.

A chemistry lab is the same. The balanced equation promised 2520 g of quicklime from 4.5 kg of limestone. The kiln gave 2500 g. Where did 20 g go?

The theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product calculated from the balanced equation. The actual yield is the amount really obtained. Percentage yield = actual yield ÷ theoretical yield × 100.
