Home Network Setup and Wi-Fi Security: PECTAA Class 12 Computer Science, Punjab Board

20 October 2026

At home, a phone, a laptop and a printer all share one internet connection. Behind that is a small network with a router at its centre. Set it up badly and neighbours can use it or read your data. This note covers how a home network is built and how the book says to secure it.

Chapter 1 of the PECTAA Computer Science 12 book is Computer Networks. Section 1.9 covers home network setup and configuration, and section 1.10 covers Wi-Fi security and router configuration. This note is for FSc Part 2 (2nd year, Class 12) students in Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Rawalpindi, Multan, Gujranwala and the other Punjab boards. Gujrat district comes under the Gujranwala board. PECTAA writes the books. Your own board sets your paper.

What to know

Home network (section 1.9). Connects the devices in a house, such as computers, mobile phones and printers, so they can communicate and share one internet connection. The router is the main device. Proper configuration improves both speed and safety.

Components.

  • Router: connects all devices in the network.
  • Modem: connects the home network to the internet service provider (ISP).
  • Network devices: computers, laptops, mobile phones.
  • Network cables: for wired connections.
  • Wi-Fi signals: for wireless devices.

Wired connections. Devices connect by cable, commonly Ethernet, directly to a router or switch. They give high speed and stable performance and are more secure than wireless. The drawback: cables limit where devices can be used.

Wireless connections. Devices connect without cables using radio signals. Wi-Fi is the most common home technology. Devices can move anywhere within range, and setup is easy, but wireless can be slower than wired in some cases.

Wi-Fi security (section 1.10). Security protects the network from unauthorized access. Without it, outsiders can use the connection, and attackers can steal personal information. Secure Wi-Fi keeps data safe and private and stops outsiders from slowing the connection.

Router configuration tools.

  1. Router web interface: opened in a web browser by typing the router's IP address, then logging in with a username and password. It lets you change the Wi-Fi name and password and control security settings.
  2. Wi-Fi encryption: converts data into a secure form before sending. WPA2 and WPA3 are common security protocols. Older ones such as WEP are not secure. Choose the latest method available.
  3. Default gateway: connects the local network to other networks. It is usually the router. Data for outside networks passes through it and is forwarded to the right network, so internet access depends on it being set correctly.

Guest networks. A separate network for visitors to use the internet. Guests cannot reach personal devices on the main network, which improves safety and privacy and helps control usage. Useful in homes and offices.

Key points

  • Router inside, modem outside: the router links home devices; the modem links the home to the ISP.
  • Wired = fast, stable, secure. Wireless = convenient, mobile, sometimes slower.
  • Use WPA2 or WPA3, never WEP, and set a strong Wi-Fi password through the router web interface.

Worked examples

Example 1. A student plays online games from a desktop that stays in one room and needs a steady connection. Wired or wireless? Wired (Ethernet). It gives high speed and stable performance, and the desktop does not need to move.

Example 2. A home router still uses WEP. What should the owner do? Open the router web interface through its IP address, log in, and switch the encryption to WPA2 or WPA3, because WEP is not secure.

Example 3. Relatives visit and want to use the internet. How can the owner keep the family laptops private? Turn on a guest network. Guests get internet access but cannot reach personal devices on the main network.

Example 4. A laptop shows a connection to Wi-Fi but cannot open any website. Which setting from this section could be wrong? The default gateway. Data for outside networks must pass through it, so a wrong gateway setting blocks internet access.

Common mistakes in the exam

  1. Mixing router and modem. The router connects home devices; the modem connects to the ISP.
  2. Calling WEP secure. The book says it is not secure.
  3. Saying wireless is always faster. Wired connections give higher speed and stability.
  4. Thinking a guest network shares everything. It is separate from the main network.
  5. Defining the default gateway as a website. It is a device, usually the router.

Exam technique

  • List components with one-line jobs: router, modem, devices, cables, Wi-Fi.
  • For wired versus wireless, compare speed, stability, security and movement in a small table.
  • Give WPA2/WPA3 as the answer to any "how to secure Wi-Fi" question, plus a strong password.
  • Check your board's notice for the topics in your paper.

Practice questions

  1. What does a modem connect? Answer: The home network to the internet service provider.
  2. Name the cable commonly used in wired home networks. Answer: Ethernet.
  3. How is the router web interface opened? Answer: By typing the router's IP address into a web browser and logging in.
  4. Name two current Wi-Fi security protocols. Answer: WPA2 and WPA3.
  5. Give one benefit of a guest network. Answer: Visitors can use the internet without reaching personal devices, which improves privacy and safety.
  6. Create a sample strong password of eight letters and digits (book class activity). Answer: For example: Lhr7Kd92 (mixing capital letters, small letters and numbers).

Quick answers

What is the main device in a home network?

The router. It connects all the devices in the network, while the modem connects the home network to the internet service provider.

What is the difference between wired and wireless connections?

Wired connections use cables such as Ethernet and give high speed, stable performance and better security, but devices cannot move around. Wireless connections use radio signals (Wi-Fi), are easy to set up and let devices move within range, but can be slower.

Which Wi-Fi encryption should be used?

WPA2 or WPA3. The book says older protocols like WEP are not secure and users should select the latest encryption method.

What is a default gateway?

The device, usually the router, that connects a local network to other networks. Data meant for outside networks goes through it.

Which board sets my paper if I study in Gujrat?

Gujrat district is listed under the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Gujranwala. PECTAA writes the books. Your board sets the paper and the dates, so follow its notices.
