The rules real numbers never break

The problem

5 is bigger than 3. Multiply both by −1, and suddenly −5 is smaller than −3. The bigger number became the smaller one.

That's not a mistake — it's a rule. Addition, multiplication and order all follow exact laws, and knowing them tells you exactly when a shortcut is safe and when it silently breaks your answer.

Real numbers obey field axioms (closure, associativity, identity, inverse, commutativity, distributivity), equality properties, and order properties — including the rule that multiplying an inequality by a negative number flips it.
