The problem

The principal says “I want software to track weak sections”. That is not enough to build anything from. Which sections? Weak in what — attendance, marks, both? Should it work on a phone? Nobody can code an answer to a question this vague.

The SDLC's first two stages turn a vague wish into a precise, agreed plan before any code is written: Preliminary Investigation, then Systems Analysis.

Preliminary Investigation identifies and scopes the system and checks whether it is worth doing at all. Systems Analysis then digs into exactly what the system must do, by gathering and studying real data from real users.
