Bits and bytes: what your 10 GB package is really counting

Your guide: Miss HiraExplains computers with chai, cricket and your phone.

The problem

Your phone has 128 GB of storage. Your monthly package gives you 10 GB of data. Your internet is “16 Mbps”. Everyone uses these numbers, and almost nobody can say what they actually count.

Deep inside, computer memory is billions of tiny switches, each either on or off. On is written as 1 and off as 0. Every photo, voice note and meme on your phone is just a very long line of these 1s and 0s.

1 bit = one 0 or 1. 1 byte = 8 bits = one character. 1 KB = 210 = 1,024 bytes.
